Despite the countless ads for instant-win scratch-off games, the odds of winning a large prize are extremely low. Winnings are generally paid out in annuity payments over decades or in one-time lump sums. The advertised jackpots are inflated by the addition of withholding taxes, which take a substantial chunk out of the winnings. Regardless, there are plenty of stories of lottery winners who have suffered unimaginable misfortunes after a big win.
