The basic principles of Poker are very similar to those of any other card game. There are five standard types of hand: a high card, a pair, a three of a kind, a straight and a flush.<\/p>\n
A high card is the one of highest value in a players hand. A pair is two cards of the same rank, while a three of a kind is three cards of different ranks.<\/p>\n
Depending on the rules, players may be required to place an initial amount of money into the pot before they are dealt their cards. These are called forced bets and come in a variety of forms: antes, blinds and bring-ins.<\/p>\n
Most people are reluctant to bet or raise unless they have a good hand. This is understandable, but it is important to be aware of little chinks in other players’ armor.<\/p>\n
